Life at the Mortensen's...: Floodsville USA

We’ve had lots of flooding in Cache Valley as of late. The old bridge in Millville usually floods in the spring, but this year is particularly bad. Jon’s dad went over this morning to help with the sand-bagging efforts. So after he got done he and I took Alex and Taysum down to get some pictures and videos for Jon.

This first video is a shot of the east side of the bridge. There were some boys there riding around on their bikes in the water (random). It was pretty windy, which makes it difficult to hear what David is saying about the water. So I took a transcription to post below the video.

"The pile of sand and the sand bags--that's where they were sand-bagging yesterday. You can see how much the water's risen overnight. The dirt and everything that you can see at the end of the water over here--that's right in front of the bridge--that's all the debris they've backhoed out of the river to make it so it'll flow more in the river but it's still overflowing the banks.

"The water's high enough that it's going over the bridge right now. This morning the road superintendent, Gary Larsen, said that because of this water coming across the road and because of the infrastructure that holds up the bridge--the bridge will probably stay in tact, but the road will probably wash out.

"That looks like a long distance that it's receded, but it's probably, like, half-inch to an inch to make it that far. That'd be my guess. If you look forward into the water that same distance, that'd be my guess is that the water went down a half-inch to an inch."

We decided to drive around to the west side, but stopped here to look at the water shooting out of the trees from the river on the other side (I didn’t want to get out of the car…it was really windy).
